Reading Log #2

Book Title: Vienna Prelude by BodieTheone                                                            December 30, 2013
Part 1:
Holocaust
-the almost complete destruction of Jews in Europe by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during World War II (1939-1945). The leadership of Germany’s Nazi Party ordered the extermination of 5.6 million to 5.9 million Jews. Jews often refer to the Holocaust as Shoah (from the Hebrew word for “catastrophe” or “total destruction”). The word holocaust derives from the Greek holo(whole) and caustos(burned) and originally referred to a burnt.

Do colors matter? Why could race differences kill millions of people in a single swipe? Who is Adolf Hitler? How did a man from the army get so powerful that he almost took over the world with his hands? Why did Germans hate the Jews? Can a violinist with a Jewish blood and all the other people around her survive the catastrophe? Nazi darkness was descending upon Europe—would their lives ever be the same?

Short summary

PRE-WORLD WAR ERA— Elisa Lindheim, a violinist with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, is of Jewish Heritage but has adopted an Aryan Stage name because of her half German blood. Thus she was able to travel and play in Germany even though a 1935 law forbade Jewish musicians to do so. When Nazi power peaked in Germany during 1939, Elisa’s family was forced to run away from Germany and flee to a place called Kitzbühelin Austria. Her mother and two younger brothers were first to escape but her father, Theo Lindheim who owned a business and was known as an anti-Nazi, shut down their business and met with Elisa, but on their way to Austrian border, Theo was captured and was taken to Dachau concentration camp where Jews and others who were against the administration are brought and treated under inhumane conditions. Meanwhile, John Murphy, a reporter for the New York Times in Berlin and Austria, becomes linked with English politicians in a plan to overthrow Hitler. Elisa met him and after many circumstances, became her lover and ally. Together, they managed to escape from the hands of Nazi armies and eventually reunited with Elisa’s family in Czechoslovakia where Jews and other non-Germans who flee from Germany lived the rest of their lives free from racism. Theo also made his way out of the concentration camp and together with Elisa and John, gained the freedom he was seeking for.

I likeElisa’s character because she is a very loving daughter who would do anything to save her father. She was shown a lot of discrimination by the Nazi officials but remained strong and still after all. Her music lifted people’s hearts and gave them encouragement to face life despite the inequity and chaos arising. She even married an American just to be able to do transactions with Germans because that time, only Germans and the citizens of the very powerful United States of America were allowed to do business inside Germany. I just don’t understand why at first she kept on pushing John away when John did nothing but to help her.
My mom used to tell us stories about the Martial Law declared by former President Marcos during 1970’s. In late September of 1972, the Philippines were rocked by its most severe domestic turmoil since the Communist insurgency of the early 1950's. A month of terrorist bombing of public facilities in Manila and Quezon City culminated on September 22 with an assassination attempt on Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile. Six hours later, President Ferdinand E. Marcos responded with the imposition of martial law. All newspapers and radio stations were closed; a few were permitted to reopen following the imposition of strict censorship. Many arrests followed, with several prominent politicians—including the leader of the opposition Liberal Party and two provincial governors—caught up in the government sweep. President Marcos characterized the campaign as an effort to save the country both from Communist insurrection and from criminal and corrupt elements pervading Philippine society. President Marcos had been the Hitler of the Philippines except that he was ousted through hundreds of thousands of people who staged a massive four-day uprising against the dictatorial regime of the president. It was called the People Power Movement.
Prediction
After Elisa and her family’s escape towards Czechoslovakia, they would start a new life and would continue to help other refugees from Germany regain their life as well. Hitler would continue to spread his power and cruelty and World War II would cause billions of damage and waste millions of lives as what really happened according to history.

Part 2
Letter to the Author
December 29, 2013

Dear Mrs. BodieThoene,
            Good day Ma’am!
I am Jermaine L. Dela Cruz, 18 years old and a student of Mindanao State University, Philippines taking up Bachelor of Arts in English.  I love reading and I find one your books, the Vienna Prelude a good reading material. I’ve read the book twice because the story really moved me plus it was very informative. I’ve known Hitler more and hated him even more (even though it’s not alright to hate people).
I have a question Ma’am. Why do people often look at other people through their colors? Why is the world full of prejudices? That’s why our world is chaotic, it’s because the colors created by God that should have been intended to make the world a beautiful place was used as barriers, barriers instead of bridges, walls instead of doors. Hitler has killed many innocent people— men, women, children, old people, destroyed families, caused many town and cities to sink and changed the people’s perception about the world as a peaceful place to live in.
Thank you very much Ma’am for writing such eye-opening and inspiring novel like Vienna Prelude and for introducing me Elisa Lindheim— the girl with flaxen hair and good violin skills. I, together with you and many others will continue to hope for the peace of the world and for the non-reoccurrence of the World War. If we continue to understand each other and dispense greed, innocent lives will be spared and the world will continue to be the best place to live in.
I promise to become a good writer like you someday and write books that will inspire people to learn to embrace life with positive outlook, love and hope inside their hearts.

Truly yours,
Jermaine L. Dela Cruz

Poem
Heil Hitler!
by: Jermaine Dela Cruz

Man of power, man of will
Man who always dressed to kill,
Man who brought nations together,
To plot against him, not to say,“Heil Hitler!”

The Great Führer, he is known,
What laughter when bombs are blown!
Several attempts were done indeed,
To disperse the man of greed.

Second World War came to pass,
But the damage seems to last,
Was he a friend or a foe?
“Heil Hitler!” they said so.
Who is he? What is he?
It is always a wonder to me,
He is the Absolute Leader,
Call him Adolf Hitler.

*Heilis a German word which means person unhurt or unharmed.

Abakada...Ina

Abakada...Ina                                                                                               December 1, 2013

"Men must be taught as if you taught them not,
And things unknown proposed as things forgot."
-Alexander Pope, English poet

Abakada..Ina is a movie that depicts how illiteracy can change the course of one’s life.
Just because her slippers were ruined on her way to school, Estela decided to go home, give up her studies and not return to school anymore. She spent the next years helping her mother sell kakanin until she finally got married to her childhood friend, Daniel and have children of her own—Gina, Beth and Joan. Her husband is a graduate of a nautical course but because of the failure every time he takes the yearly exam for Marines, he was not able to get a good job and became a ship rust remover instead. That was also the reason why they could not get a house of their own and kept on living with Daniel’s mother, Matilda.
Among Estela’s daughters, Beth is the most intelligent. She always gets the highest score in examinations at school. Gina on the other hand, is the dullest. Their grandmother Matilda, being a teacher, always checks their report cards. She was always proud of Beth’s performance in school but got disgusted every time Gina showed her report of grades. Estela felt that Matilda was belittling her daughter because Estrela was illiterate. They always had an argument and Estela wished so hard that Daniel would come back home so they can move away from Matilda’s house.Because of the discouragement and suffering he experienced at the ship, Daniel finally came home and after several arguments with Estela, agreed to move to Manila and start a new life.
They had not realized what life awaited them as they leave their town. With the help of Daniel’s mother, he paid a fixer to quicken the process of his papers at the Marine Company and looked for a short-term job as he waited the day of examination. Gina kept on selling kakanin. Because of Estela’s ignorance, she and her family were put into risk a couple of times. One incident was when a lady bought kakaninand said, “Keep the change”. Because of not understanding that term, she regretted for giving the costumer the change of her payment.Another incident was when Gina and Beth did not come home for hours that made Daniel and Estela worried and went looking for them. Estela thought that she was following Daniel until she rode with him on the jeepney and brought somewhere. She realized later that she was mistaken and worse, was lost. Good thing she found that lady costumer who helped her come home. On the other hand, Gina and Beth were almost raped by their new 'friends'. After more suffering brought to them by their fate, Daniel and Estela decided to go back to their province.
Their family suffered even more as they continued to live with Matilda. Estela’s argument with the old lady worsened that she decided to leave with her children, but because Daniel grabbed the children away from her, she left with nothing but tears in her eyes.
Her daughters felt deep longing for their mother, especially Joan who kept on crying for many nights. Her youngest tried to find her way to Estela who was living with her mother far on the other side of their town. Despite the hardship of walking alone, the little child finally found her mother with the help of a man from the same place. Their reunion brought tears into the eyes of both of them. Estela’s loss from their home brought a lot of change not only to her daughters but to her husband as well. Daniel tried to change and look for a better job, and tried to get Estela back. It was very noticeable that despite the pain he had given Estela, he still loved his wife very much.
Soon, Estela realized that her illiteracy was the main reason of their suffering and decided to reconcile with Daniel, her children and Matilda. She went to school with her youngest and talked to Matilda. That was my favorite part in the movie because as Estela says that she needed to continue her studies to become a good wife and mother, Matilda answers her that there is no need to learn about that. She can teach her everything from the book, but she can’t teach her to become a good mother because she already is. The story ends well as each character faces a better life with Estela telling the story to her son, the newest part of their family.
Indeed, education can change the course of our lives. School can teach us to read, write and solve Math problems but it can never teach us love and compassion for what is not thought by the mind, can be felt by the heart.

Book Title: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Book Title: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins                                                  December 1, 2013

In a place of hunger, suffering and death, how could a young lady protect her own life and the life of every people of her nation and stop all the cruelty and injustice? Is there a possibility that the Hunger Games will happen in the real world? I think there is a real Apocalypse, an Armageddon, because the world, as I see it, is slowly coming to its end. Or isn’t it?

The annual Hunger Games is too unjustly and inhuman to serve as punishment for every District in Panem for the rebellion that was once done by the Thirteen Districts long, long time ago. Two ‘tributes’ for every District are chosen to fight each other until only one is left to be called the Victor to whom his or her District will receive tons of supplies from the Sponsors of food and other needs that include medicines and things that will keep each man on the district alive. These Tributes aging from 12 to 16 years old are too young and vulnerable to face the battlefield. I can’t imagine the agony each family of the tribute feels because of their death, and the relief of every victor’s family. 1,702 lives were already taken away since the very first until the 74thAnnual Hunger Games. When the name of Katniss’ sister, the twelve year old Prim was drawn, like Katniss, I was very surprised but because she loves her sister very much, she volunteered to take over her place. I can’t blame Katniss for hating the Capitol so much that it came to the extent of lying to the man who loves her very much— Peeta whose name was also drawn to join the annual battle. She was forced to act like she is madly in love with Peetato keep the both of them alive until the end and to protect her sister and mother from District 12. For that I pity forPeeta and Gale, Katniss’ bestfriend who I think, is also in love with her. I hated the Capitol as well because they keep on changing the rules as the game comes to an end. I felt relieved when the announced that if two tributes from the same district stay alive until the end, both of them will be held as victors, and it happened, Katniss and Peetasurvived the Hunger Games. Then, the Capitol changed its mind again and announced that only one should survive the game. But in the end, because of Katniss’ cleverness, both of them were still hailed as victors of the Hunger Games.
I really love this book and I can’t wait to read the Part Two— Catching Fire.

KatnissEverdeen and I have a lot in common. Like Katniss, I was born in a poor family. Every day, my parents strive very hard but it was barely enough to sustain our daily living. Reading the book reminded me of our old life. Our town was somewhat similar to District 12. I also have a little sister. She’s my greatest treasure because she is my only little sibling and I was the very first one to see her after she was born (my mom was unconscious because she delivered thru caesarian). I believe I should protect my little sister whatever happens along the way, even if it takes my life. One time, my mom scolded my little sister because of something she has done. Mom neglected her for several hours. I was upset with Mom because I know that my little sister did not do it on purpose. She was very young and unaware of what she is doing. My father was away working so I was the one who took care of her and reprimanded my mom. After sometime, she came back to her senses and definitely took over to take care of my little sister. Katniss’ mother also neglected them for some time after Katniss’ father died. Her mother became insane for several months. So Katniss took over the responsibility that was supposed to be her Mother’s.

After Katniss and Peeta’s victory from the Hunger Games changes the usual system, I presume that in the future, the Hunger Games will be less brutal and soon, there will be no more Hunger Games, just the friendly games. No one will be fighting just to be fed and justice will finally prevail in their country, Panem.

Part II
A.
·         What I most wanted to happen was the annual Hunger Games to end so that no more life would be wasted.
·         What I really liked was when I saw Katniss and Peeta having their entrance at the Opening Ceremony of the Annual Hunger Games with their outfits on fire.
·         What surprised me was to discover that Peeta has a special feeling for Katniss ever since they were kids.
·         What I most admired about the main character was her great will to end the injustice brought by the yearly Hunger Games.
·         What saddened me was when Rue died and Katniss sang for her as tears were falling from her eyes.
·         What I want to know was the author’s real motive for writing this novel.
·         What I hated the most was when the Gamemakers kept on changing the rules of the game to keep the audience from the Capitol enjoying the scene as if the Tributes participating are just characters in a computer game.
·         What I want the other readers to feel as they read the novel is the great need to love their own country and its people.
·         What kept me from reading the novel wasthe thrill and the suspense of knowing if Katniss will survive the Hunger Games.
·         What I realized as I watched the movie version of The Hunger Games was the book is a lot better than the movie but it helped me to somehow visualize what I was reading.

B.
“We could do it, you know..leave the district. Run off. Live in the woods. You and I, we could make it.”
Gale
Gale said these lines when they were about to gather at the park of District 12 and get the participants’ names drawn. Based on these lines, I can feel how much Gale loves Katniss and how much he wanted to protect her from the dangers of the Hunger Games.
I believe Gale is a good man. He is Katniss’ best friend who I think, is also in love with her secretly. He shared with Katnisss every food he has gathered, and taught her to make traps for animals.

“Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!”

-President Snow

I wonder why the president and other high officials who come to the stage always start their speech with that line. The president is selfish, coward and weak because he cannot stand for the good and just. He was only thinking of the good of the few, he was not thinking of the good of the people of the nation he is leading.

“Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to . . . to show the Capitol they don’t own me. That I’m more than just a piece in their Games.”

-Peeta

These lines are my favorite. Peeta, at the first part of the story is not as valued as Katniss. He is an average boy, son of a baker, no special skill except for decorating cakes, but as the story went by, his skills were slowly discovered which helped him and Katniss survive the games. He was willing to risk his life for Katniss because he is in love with Katniss for a very long time but didn’t have the courage to tell her. I was just disappointed because Katniss lied and pretended that she was in love with him. I just hope he will be loved by Katniss at the end of the story. I can’t wait to read the next book— Catching Fire to see if Katniss will finally fall in love with Peeta.
